Organiser's Comments 'What would you like to do this year?' asked Ray. So I dutifully volunteered to organise the Bestwood event. (The alternative was a badge event in Clumber). I could not have been more fortunate in more ways than one. Firstly, the weather was kind to us. It was nice and warm and the sun even offered to shine as we were packing up. Secondly, because of the events leading up to this weekend, I was able to talk directly to the team leaders to organise helpers. Therefore only a minimal amount of time had to be spent on the phone and e-mail. It makes life so much easier for the organiser to know that there is a fully recruited and well trained 'work force' poised and ready to swing into action. The organiser's main concerns are making sure that the right equipment is at the right place at the right time and ensuring that the route to the event is well signposted. I think I achieved these tasks. I ought to have; I had run through it in my mind so many times. Even to the extent that, when I woke up at my 6 o'clock alarm, I thought I had already done the event, it was now Monday morning and I had not reset my alarm. Wrong! Wake Up!

I would like to thank all those who have helped or given a guiding hand. Far too many to mention. Helen for nominating new team leaders at short notice. Chris for providing an efficient and smooth running registration team. David for ensuring that the finish was set up in good time. Ralph and Sue, who were the stalwarts of the results team and did a superb job. Keith, Sue and John for organising the start. Finally to Ray who was the only competitor to notice my deliberate spelling mistake. (No there wasn't a wedding).

Planner's Comments NOC's most technical area is a planners dream - abundant control sites and technical terrain. The difficulty arises in not making the courses too challenging, especially too much climb on shorter courses. Hopefully, all competitors enjoyed the results of my efforts. Thanks must go to Alan Beardsley for his advice and tuition to this novice planner and also to Catherine for help setting things out.

Controller's Comments Thank you to everyone who came and made the turnout a respectable 200 plus, despite there being 8 other Colour-Coded events, and a Badge Event, to choose from on today's crowded fixture list.

Bestwood is in many ways our best wood, especially at this time of year, and the sheer pleasure of being in runnable broad-leaved terrain is a real tonic, made even more enjoyable by a proper Spring day.

Not only enjoyable, though - Bestwood is also challenging, with lots of opportunities for route-choice, and for confusion and lost time for the unwary or inexperienced. Certificate times on the Orange and Light Green courses, in particular, showed how lots of people on these courses must have spent more than a minute or two scratching their heads.

White, Yellow, Green, and Blue times were much as expected, but on Brown John Hawkins proved lightning quick in his determination to win a head-to-head with DVO rival Andy Jackson. The mere mortals on Brown recorded more predictable times. Overall, a splendid effort from planner Anthony Donaldson, who made very good use of the area's strengths, with lots of interesting legs. I spent most of the event at the Finish, and every comment I heard about the courses was positive - a fine achievement.

We had no choice over the restriction on Horse-Trail use, as the Country Park Rangers make this "No Pedestrian" rule a blanket one. And to be fair, there are 4 riding-schools who make use of the Park, many of whose clients are novices who couldn't handle a horse which had been "spooked". Thank you to all who respected this restriction.

Bestwood's only negative aspect is that it adjoins several typical city housing estates, and in view of past experience, we were all expecting a fairly high level of vandalism and idiocy, causing controls to go missing, or whatever. (That was the main reason for not using Sport-Ident, too.) In the event, we had not a single problem - count yourselves very lucky!!

In the end, I reckon we can count it a successful day, thanks to the co-operation of the Country Park Rangers, and the Crimea Plantation Landowners, and to all the people who helped, especially to Anthony Donaldson, John Middler, and all the hard-working Team-Leaders, who regularly and selflessly give up so much of their time.

See you all at Byron's Walk on 14th April.
