I really enjoyed the 2 'sprint' courses at Beaumanor/Welbeck College this am. Planner/Controller told me that people were still going through or over places they shouldn't. Whilst I can understand the problems with walls that seem to be crossable but aren't to newbies there's no excuse for someone in a NOC top being spotted going through the college section with purple OOB overprint - same symbol and rules as for forest 'O'.

Well done to all the NOC members who turned up at a very windy Burbage, i'd had enough half way round the Brown, the long leg in the middle did it for me . The 2 lots of Micro-nav was very good, but as for the rest, it was just a test of endurance!!
Where were all the other NOC members for the Champs'? You can't really call it a championship with so few / only 1 participant in each class. Where was all the other 300 members!!!
Why wasn’t the championship tagged onto to the back of one of the EMOA events in Notts, i’m sure more would of turned up for it & made it a bit more competitive?

A number of formulae have been tried over the years and this is the most recent. Previously the method produced one club champion and now it provides one per age group. Both methods have thrown up unusual results. To comment on Keith's earlier observation, as an M70 I would expect to compete on the Green course for M70L in a Regional Level B event so I do not think that adding a black has affected what people compete on for their respective long courses. Dave Cook has commented that he won M60 by not running the short blue, but then other M60's did not take part on any course. The same is true for a number of other category winners.

It was a good test of stamina out there as well as a good test of navigational ability on the micro 'O' in the boulder area, which got the better of some competitors. Those who chose not to be there missed a good challenge.

I am sure the NOC Committee will review the format of the Club championships on a regular basis, but as one who has never one a Club Championship category before I am happy with the format for now!

Why is it that only age is taken into consideration for the championships?

Ability of a competitor is not taken into account, someone maybe in their 60s but if they have been doing orienteering for 30 years they are going to have more experience than someone like me in their late 40s and been orienteering for less then 2 years.

There is no way I could have done the short brown/ brown on Sunday for the following reasons 1) Too longer length, 2) Area a lot more difficult compared to noc terrain, 3) No chance of having a fair crack at a trophy.

If the club champ was done on a local event and I think most club members know the abilities of other members, members could organise an event where courses could be planned to suit age and abilities so everyone would feel they had a fair chance of winning something.

Much as I would like to be awarded the M60 prize, I must point out that I actually ran the Green course instead of the Blue in order to minimise the rather painful after effects on my knee.

I did find it hard work and it was certainly physically challenging as Keith mentioned, but that was easily offset by the beautiful views and lovely weather.

I would like to say how much I enjoyed the event, particularly as I had a good walk/run, but regretfully I had to dash off very quickly afterwards for family reasons and didn't have time to speak to anyone after finishing. Hopefully I shall see more of you for a chat next time out.

Is it my imagination or has the introduction of a Black course dragged everyone up to a harder course

Burbage can be physical enough without making it even harder for the majority of the older less fit club members ...namely me!

Anyone else noticed? any alternative suggestions or is it a fait accompli?

Mike Godfree has asked me to post this on his behalf which should clear things up:

"As it happens I had the boxes after the event and the final split was queried by another competitor. So I checked.
The finish boxes had been synchronised and by the Tuesday all 4 boxes (2 finishes) were still running within 1 second of one another so overall times are correct.
However the other boxes had not been recently synchronised and there were two boxes at control 145. By the Tuesday one box was running seven seconds fast and the other was 10 seconds fast so the individual splits could be either 7 seconds or 10 seconds faster than the correct time for a leg that measures 90m. 35 competitors punched at one of the boxes and 139 at the other. Beyond that it is too late now to look any further, but I can assure you all the boxes will be synchronised before the CS Cup Final. Mike Godfree DVO

Thanks, Mike"

DVO will hopefully have synced the start and finish boxes before the event but the times on the other controls will have probably wondered. It was probably the last control where the timing was wayward, in which case the total time will be unaffected. Noticed this has happened quite a few times at SYO events. This is the bad thing about the new boxes; they don't need reprogramming every time like the old ones.
