Day 1 - Short Races - Saturday
Day 2 - Badge Event - Sunday

Saturday 13th Feb 1999
Short Races
Sherwood Pines South

Travel Directions The event will be signed from the A614 at grid ref. SK 637620 (Sheet 120), 2.5 miles north of the A614 / A617 junction, and 2 miles south of A614 / B6034 junction. Turn west into the minor road. The A614 is a fast major road, and it is much easier to turn in from the south.

Travel west for 1.2 miles to reach the parking. Please take care along this quiet road, the residents seem to think they own it.

There is NO ENTRANCE to the event via Sherwood Pines Visitor Centre - ignore the brown tourist signs.

When you are leaving the event, you might wait many minutes to turn south into the A614. It may be preferable to go north and around the roundabout at Ollerton. Please consider others if you see a queue building behind you.

Parking is on forest roads at SK 619618 as directed by the marshalls. The forest road is also a designated cycle route. Please give every consideration to the cyclists.

Dogs are OK if under control.

When you depart please make sure you leave no rubbish, especially telltale insulating tape from your laces.

If you are bringing a coach, you must call the organiser before the event.

Assembly is north along the forest road adjacent to parking. The Finish for both races is just beyond assembly.

Facilities will include enquiries, control description display, toilets, St. John's Ambulance and the result display. No equipment traders have told us they are coming. Sadly there can be no food traders as the area is within Sherwood Pines for which another party holds the concession. Bring your own food and drink.

Enquiries The enquiries tent will deal with any pre-entry corrections, and payment adjustments for either day. Only exceptional changes will be made to your pre-entries. Changes for the Sunday Badge event may involve collection of your revised cards on Sunday.

There is no EOD, no Colour Coded courses and no String course.

Summary of Procedure The first race is a normal cross-country time trial, just shorter. Everything happens like a normal badge event. The courses have been set with an anticipated winning time of 30 mins.

At the finish, within 5 minutes of handing in your card you will receive a card for the next race complete with your new start time.

Your start time for the second race is calculated by adding your time from the first race to 14:00. However, those runners taking more than 1 hour (or retiring before 14:20) will be given new start times at ten second intervals starting from 15:00 - EXCEPT if a runner finishes after the first race closing time of 14:20, they will NOT be allowed to start the second race.

From 13:15 the second race control descriptions and details of the second start will be available.

The second race is a chasing start. Again it is like a badge event, with the pre-marked, bagged maps available after the start line. The courses have been set with an anticipated winning time of 20 mins.

To ease getting everyone in sequence, you will be called up in 1 minute batches at minus 5 mins. The starter will count you down to the exact second you have to start. There may be several people starting within a few seconds, or even on the same second. To avoid fights, there will be several boxes of maps for each course. If you haven't been in a chasing start before, please ask.

The finish of the second race is as per normal practice. Your finish order is automatically your cumulative race order for both races (excepting those starting after 15:00).

Control Descriptions will be IOF for all courses. Those for the first race will be displayed in Assembly until 13:00. The descriptions for the second race will be displayed from 13:15.

There are two non-standard IOF symbols.
IOF symbol for Earthbank means a Stump Bank
IOF symbol for special feature, 'X', means a Tripod

Start 1 Please make sure you take the control card for the Saturday Short Race.

The first start is a max of 600m from parking. Call up is at -3 mins. Bagged overprinted maps issued after the start line.

Start times are from 12:00 to 13:15. The starter will allow late starters when an empty minute appears. Times will not be altered.

No provision has been made for a Clothing Dump as the parking / starts / finish are all relatively close together.

Finish 1 At the finish please stay in your finishing sequence until you have been handed your numbered ticket. After stapling, hand in your card, and then follow the tapes to the drinks point. Water and/or orange juice will be available. After five minutes continue following the tapes back to the results tent, where you will be handed your control card for the Chasing Start race. There is no map collection.

Start 2 The second start is also close to Assembly. Details will be provided from 13:15 together with the second race control descriptions. The second race is a Chasing Start. Call up is -5 mins. Bagged overprinted maps are issued after you have started. If you are not familiar with the procedure, you will have plenty of time to get yourself in sequence. Please ask if you are unsure.

The starter will only allow late starters when they will not inconvenience others. Times will not be altered.

Finish 2 Same as first finish, except of course you won't need to pause whilst another card is prepared!

Control Cards are made of Polyart. You must write your competitor number in waterproof ink on the back of the card. If the weather or your activity is likely to destroy the bar coded label, then please protect it!

There is no stub; you will be checked into the forest from a master list.

You will receive your card for the second race at the finish of the first race.

Safety Course Closing Times:
The first race closes at 14:20.
The second race closes at 15:45.

If you have been checked into the forest for either race you must report to the finish even if you have retired.

The organiser wishes to point out that the event has been fitted into Saturday afternoon to facilitate those who might wish to travel from afar. Consequently there is much less time after the event to search for missing competitors. Please make sure you do follow the Golden Rule about reporting to the Finish. Sunset is at 17:15.

Competitors take part at their own risk. Whistles are compulsory and are recommended for your own safety.

Your attention is drawn to the presence of cyclists and a horse riding school who use this area extensively.

Map / Controls / Terrain 1:15000, 5m contours, surveyed 1996, pre-marked courses, bagged. Available after the start.

Control sites consist of numbered kites with freestanding punches on canes.

"A typical East Midlands working coniferous forest, with forest blocks at all stages of runnability and with a strong linear path network. There are large areas of invasive undergrowth (brambles) as a direct consequence of the mild wet winter and the underlying bunter sandstone. All courses have been planned to avoid the worst of these areas."

Results Provisional results will be displayed at the event, and on the Double Kiss Weekend web site http://www.engtech.co.uk/NOC/kisskiss by Saturday evening, and at the Badge event.

Sunday 14th Feb 1999
Badge Event, Midlands Championships, Robin Hood Trophy
Sherwood Forest and Budby

Travel Directions The event is at SK613665 (Map 120), 0.8 mile west of Edwinstowe, on the A6075. Turn north into the farm track as directed by the marshalls. The road is straight and fast, but the turning is just over the crest of a hill to the east. Hence it is preferable to arrive from the west, and we would expect these orienteers to allow those coming from east to turn in first to avoid a tailback just over the hill.

We are aware of a Sunday Market further west towards Mansfield. This has caused problems before because the public seeing a field full of cars simply turn in like sheep. We hope improved signage will deter them.

The entrance becomes an exit at 12:30, so no entrance after that, and no exit before!

Parking is on a well-drained sloping field. You will be directed along the farm track. Please don't dally, we don't want any tailbacks in the main road.

There will be a £1 fee per vehicle. Please park as directed.

Please respect the needs of the residents whose houses are adjacent to one corner of the field.

When you depart please make sure you leave no rubbish, especially telltale insulating tape from your laces.

There is alternative parking for coaches, please ask the Organiser before the event.

Assembly The western edge of the field will be used for assembly. Facilities will include Enquiries/Map Sales, Trophy Return, Colour Coded Registration, Control Descriptions Display, Results Display, Traders (Ultrasport/Xanda/Wilfs), St. John's Ambulance and Toilets.

Enquiries The enquiries team will deal with any problems with pre-entries and will allow some adjustments subject to limitations of prepared maps. There is no EOD for the Badge event. If travelling alone, you may leave your car keys, preferably labelled, at Enquiries.

Would all Midland trophy holders please return them to the Enquiries tent as soon as you have parked.

Colour Coded Courses White, Yellow, Orange and Green courses will be available. Please pay at Enquiries, and register at the adjacent cars. £2.50, £1.00 Junior/M65+/W60+, £3.50 non-BOF.

White, Yellow, Orange will have pre-marked, bagged maps at the start, Green will use Master Maps after the start.

If you run or shadow on a colour-coded course before your Badge run, then you will become non-competitive in the Badge event.

Dogs on lead are allowed in the car park and assembly. Dogs are also permitted in the competition area if under close control. You should be aware that there are sheep in the adjacent fields.

String Course There is a free string course. It is situated in the forest 600m, 8 mins easy walk from the north west corner of parking. Please note all adjacent forest is OOB.

Control Cards are made of Polyart. You must write your competitor number in waterproof ink on the back of the card. If the weather or your activity is likely to destroy the bar coded label, then please protect it!

If you haven't received your card(s) with these details, there is a problem with your entry that can be resolved at Enquiries.

Control Descriptions Enlarged Control Descriptions will be displayed on the fence at the north end of the parking fields. IOF for all courses, except that written descriptions will be available for Courses 14-16.

Map / Controls / Terrain The map is 1:15000, 5m contours, partial re-survey 1999, pre-marked courses, bagged. Available after the start (except Green Colour-Coded).

Control sites are marked by a plain kite with numbered trestle punches.

The terrain is gently undulating, with three distinct areas:

Statement by English Nature regarding the SSSI, i.e. Country Park and MOD parts of the map "This site is internationally important for wildlife and this event has been permitted by specific agreement with English Nature. To protect this important wildlife, competitors must take care to keep off heather, mossy areas, and fallen deadwood and trees. Wherever possible, take a route that avoids large ancient trees, as there is potential danger from falling limbs."

Out-of-Bounds

Start The start is 1200m, 15 mins easy walk from assembly. At half way there is an un-marshalled area adjacent to the String Course where you may leave extra clothing. No bags provided - bring your own.

There are no toilets after you have left Assembly, and the forest on the way to the Start is all OOB.

Call up is at -3 mins. Bagged overprinted maps issued after the start line for the Badge courses and White, Yellow, Orange colour-coded. Green course will use the Master Map system. Start times are from 10:30 to 12:30, with some helpers before and after. The starter will allow late starters when an empty minute appears. Times will not be altered. There will be a separate start lane for Colour Coded courses. For the Badge event, there is no stub, you will be checked into the forest from a master list. For the Colour Coded event, normal stub collection will be used.

Finish At the finish please stay in your finishing sequence until you have been handed your numbered ticket. After stapling, hand in your card, and then follow the tapes to the drinks point. Water and/or orange juice will be available. There is no map collection.

The finish is 1000m, 12 mins easy walk from assembly, and you pass the clothing dump about half way back. Please be sure to collect any clothing you may have left. For split starts: the start is 900m, 10 mins easy walk, 5 mins run from the finish.

If he is unable to resolve the matter to your satisfaction, you may submit a written protest at Enquiries to the Controller, with a £5 deposit. A Jury will be called to adjudicate. (BOF Rules 11.1 - 11.2).

Results Due to the distance from the Finish to Results processing, provisional results will begin being displayed in Assembly from 11:30. Full results will be on the Double Kiss Weekend web site http://www.engtech.co.uk/NOC/kisskiss by Sunday evening. Results booklet will include short races, badge, colour coded and string courses.

Presentations The presentation of trophies for the Midlands Championships will be made as soon as possible after 14:30 outside Enquiries. The printed results will announce the club winning the Robin Hood Trophy.

Safety Course Closing Time is 14:30. If you have been checked into the forest, you must report to the finish even if you have retired. Please make sure you do follow this Golden Rule. Sunset is at 17:15.

Competitors take part at their own risk. Whistles are compulsory and are recommended for your own safety.

Your attention is drawn to:

  1. The statement from English Nature regarding falling limbs from ancient trees (see above in 'Terrain' section).
  2. The northern part of the area is used for military training. It is unwise to stand on, kick or pick-up any unfamiliar man-made objects. There may be short sections of barbed wire.
  3. A new SUSTRANS cycle track passes through the competition area, and also crosses the return route from the Finish. Please make sure Juniors are aware that cyclists may be using this track.
