New maps have limitations. Several excellent control sites were lost due to other similar unmapped features nearby. My apologies to Green runners who felt that not enough 'green' was mapped near control no. 57 - the thicket. They are right. As a planner I regret not approaching the control site in the same direction as those on Green. It is simpler approaching from the opposite direction.
My thanks to Ray Barnes for hours of patient and meticulous controlling, to Hazel Rice and Steve Wright for help with the kites on the day, and Keith Streb for 'manning' the manned control.
Bob Alderson
Those of you on the longer courses may wonder why the approach to and departure from the 2nd Master Maps was a little contrived; well, maps take time to mature. I have no doubt the next version of this map will have more useable control sites, and hence the next planner will be able to keep you even more off the paths.
Visiting the southern end of the woods two weeks before the event, Bob and I decided that there was a risk of competitors drowning at some of the control sites near the stream, and discovering late that ownership of that area was not with the Forestry Commission, we therefore had no access permission, and couldn't use anything south of the e-w path anyway.
Parking was going to be on forest tracks inside Thieves Wood on the other side of the main road. Another late change meant we had to park inside Harlow itself. Thanks are due to Hilary for coping with the loss of toilets, water supply, a building for Registration, and having to create a new string course again.
It is a pleasure to have such an organised and adjacent Planner, especially one who brings along a bottle of red wine to make the courses look sweeter! Thanks Bob for all your hard work.
