Beginners: ... help here
This event is suitable for newcomers.
The area is Urban/Parkland. You will need clothes and footwear suitable for the weather and terrain.
We like to help newcomers to get started. There is a newcomer email where you can ask for advice. Please let us know that you are coming to the event and we will allocate someone to help you.

Courses: ... explanation

This event will offer several opportunities to practise your ‘Sprint’-style orienteering.
This may be useful as you prepare for the British Sprint/Mixed Sprint Relay
championships, other summer races or generally to improve your urban/sprint
orienteering skills.

‘Sprint’-style orienteering for newcomers: Short courses with frequent controls
(checkpoints) and lots of decisions e.g. ‘which way?’ ‘which side of the building? Etc.
It’s fun – the best people do sprint; the rest go at the speed that is comfortable for
them!

The format of the day will be:
• Between 1030 and 1145 there will be opportunity to do up to 4 loops of varying
distance. It’s anticipated these loops would take ~10 to 15minutes each.
• From 1200 there will be opportunity to take part in a 2 x 2person Sprint relay –
with informal pairs being formed on the day. It’s anticipated that each leg would take
~8 to 12 minutes each.
• There will be a choice of Long, Medium and Short distance legs, which you can
choose on the day.

It’s anticipated that everyone will be finished by about 1300.

Your entry fee is to cover all the above activities, so we hope most people can stay
for the whole time. On entering you just need to choose if you want to work with a
1:3000 or 1:4000 scale, so we can print off sufficient maps of each scale.
FYI at the British Sprint Champs there will be 1:3000 scale for M65+/W55+

We’ll be joined by a number of junior squad training groups, and we would welcome
any other regional or club coaches that would like to work with a group of orienteers
to also make themselves known.
