Organiser

Having agreed to organise an event for the first time in a long time, the prospect became a whole lot more worrying on learning that the JOK Chasing Sprint was to take place at the same time. However Caroline Catmur, the JOK organiser, liaised very well. The experienced NOC teams for each role help make the life of a NOC organiser much easier. So it wasn't so bad after all!

I would like to thank the team leaders and their helpers from NOC, the help and support from the planner and controllers, and the JOK team for helping to make the day enjoyable. We hope you enjoyed the day and the crisp, sunny weather we managed to arrange for you.

Planner

Its hard to know what to say ...

Due to the unique nature of this event there were many planning constraints that you would not normally encounter. Very early on myself and Graeme the JOK planner decided we were tired of hiding orienteering away and decided to make it as obvious to the public as possible. I also wanted to negate the possible effects of bad weather (having being caught in the hail at Sherwood Forest a few weeks earlier). With hind-site however this may not have been the best thing, as access to the finishes was non-existent from the North and East further funnelling the courses into a narrow corridor between barren areas.

I am aware that a couple of courses were compromised, in particular the Green, which due to control clashes and the new BOF regulations was far too much of a path run for my liking, and the Blue which had to make a couple of detours to try and avoid the JOK start/finish. I hope that no one found these too onerous.

The map was a last minute thing and left a lot to be desired! Suffice it to say it will not be repeated. As digital printing is now a fait-accompli we are looking into ways to improve the quality.

At least the weather was good. 6 degrees centigrade warmer than the previous day!

My thanks in particular go to Tony for his patience and forbearing when I managed to make yet another Doh! moment in the planning. Without him you would still all be out there looking for non-existent or moved controls. Thanks also to Andy Jones and particularly all the JOK/NOC helpers over the two days.

I don't think the area was suitable for this experiment and I know I would not repeat it but I hope you all enjoyed it for what it was.

See you all at the JK then where I am sure you will remark on the amazing similarity between the terrains! "Exit stage left to the sound of maniacal laughter"
