For those who already have a Decathlon card or those thinking of getting one then NOC have joined the scheme which should benefit NOC.

If you already have your own loyalty card for Decathlon, please would you email Catherine Hughes with the name on the card and the unique number. Decathlon can then link your card with NOC's so that both you and the club benefit when you make purchases from Decathlon.
Concerns have been raised in the media recently over the threat to ash trees in the UK, following the identification of the potentially deadly disease of Ash Dieback (Chalara faxinea).

British Orienteering has issued the following advice to all clubs on the biosecurity measures that should be taken by all orienteers (i.e. Planners, Controllers and control hangers, as well as competitors) when holding or participating in an area suspected to contain Ash trees:

Thoroughly wash all footwear before leaving the area, ensuring that all mud, soil and leaf litter is removed. Event organisers may wish to provide water, buckets and brushes at a suitable location i.e. at a point where there is little risk of further contamination.

On returning home, rinse all boots and shoes in a chlorine based cleaner or garden fungicide and allow them to dry thoroughly. N.B. please read the manufacturer’s label and follow their instructions on use and disposal of the product.

Thoroughly wash and dry all kit and any other clothing that may potentially have been contaminated with fungal spores.

Clothing and footwear should not be reused for at least 48 hours after drying.

While it is currently thought that the disease is restricted to East Anglia and the South East of England, this position may change as Forestry Commission pathologists and surveyors enter more woodlands. Please keep reviewing the British Orienteering website for up-to-date information and advice.

Peter Brett, Environment Officer, British Orienteering

If clubs have any further questions or concerns please email the British Orienteering National Office at info@britishorienteering.org.uk or call 01629 734042.

Good luck to all those from NOC who are running in tomorrow's event at Eyam, the event is on, parking has been changed, start times are delayed by 30 minutes, cagoules will be compulsory. Full details are on the DVO Website.
There was a good turnout at Wellow Woods today for the NOC Winter League event. Albeit a fairly small wood it is one of NOC's most technically challenging areas and one that takes people by surprise. The courses were planned to maximise the use of the better areas of wood although to get the distance in, the longer courses did also encounter some areas of brambles. The introductory and medium courses were boosted by members of Loughborough Girls Grammar School who chose to use the event as a warm up for next weeks British Schools Event in Delamere Forest. Well done to all those who attended we trust you enjoyed your run on a crisp Autumnal morning. Thanks to all those who made donations towards hot drinks, we raised £12.55, which being 11th Nov we will donate to the Royal British Legion.

To be a member of British Orienteering you will still need to be a member of an affiliated club and association and pay the appropriate club and association membership fee where they apply.

You will be able to renew your membership from 1 November 2012 for the 2013 membership year. This is later than in previous years when renewal commenced from the 1 September.

2013 Membership Scheme Frequently Asked Questions

Will British Orienteering still have a Local and National Level of Membership?

No, British Orienteering will only have one level of membership.

Will British Orienteering still have junior, senior, student, family and associate grades of membership?

No, British Orienteering will only offer senior or junior membership.

Will clubs still be able to have a family or student membership category and will the British Orienteering membership database be able to support this?

Yes, clubs can continue to offer a family and student membership category and the British Orienteering membership database and online payment system will support this.

If each member of my family is now an individual member of British Orienteering, will each member of my family now receive separate communications from British Orienteering?

No, the British Orienteering membership database will automatically group individual members together who are in the same club and live at the same address. Households will therefore only receive one communication from British Orienteering. E.g. one copy of Focus magazine.

Will the renewal period still be January to December?

Yes, the membership year remains as January to December with people being able to join or renew for the following year from the 1 November.

When can I renew my membership?

You can renew your membership from the 1 November 2012. This is a change from the 1 September to allow clubs more time to set their fees for the following year.

Will I receive a Renewal reminder?

Yes, British Orienteering will send you a renewal reminder in early November 2012 stating your membership fees for 2013. If our membership database contains an email address for your household, the renewal notice will be sent electronically, otherwise a reminder will be sent by post.

How can I renew my membership?

You can renew online via our website, over the phone by telephoning 01629 734042 or by post.

When will I receive a membership card?

The cost and necessity of membership cards has been discussed and we have decided to no longer issue cards, and will instead provide a letter confirming your membership and the relevant details. As with renewals, if our membership database contains an email address for your household, the membership confirmation will be sent electronically, otherwise a letter will be sent by post.

Will British Orienteering still offer Direct Debit as a payment method?

Yes, the ability to pay membership by direct debit will be continued. However now the membership fees are so low there will no longer be a £1 discount for paying by direct debit. Notice of Direct Debit payments will be sent by email where feasible.

How can I check my contact details are up to date and/or provide you with an email address?

You can change your contact details and provide British Orienteering with an email address by logging into the members area of the website. Alternatively please contact the National Office on 01629 734042 or info@britishorienteering.org.uk

I'd just like to say thank you to everyone who donated money to my just giving page for the Birmingham Half Marathon.

I ran the race in 1hr 40min 14secs which I was really pleased with and am chuffed to have raised over £200 for The Smile Train - a great charity close to my heart.

Thanks again, Jenny Evans
Many runners on the Green, Blue, and Brown courses left their maps behind at the map exchange controls last weekend. I recovered all of these from the forest and they will be available to collect from me (Dave Cooke) at several future events. Your first opportunity is at the MDOC White Peak Day 1 event on Saturday 27/10/12 at Goyt Valley/Errwood - and possibly from one of my NOC colleagues at Carsington on Sunday. I shall post further notices to advise where I shall be orienteering in the future, so that you have further chances to catch up with me.
A big thanks to all those juniors who turned out for NOC today at Byron's walk. LEI proved too strong in a tight fought contest with NOC finishing second and DVO third. Full results are here.
The Ollerton Pit Wood night event has a change of date, it will now be held on the 26th January 2013. This is two weeks before the British Night Championships being held at Tankersley (SYO)

The date has been rescheduled to allow for a new map revision to be completed.
Calling all juniors, it is the Yvette Baker Trophy heat on Sunday at Byron`s Walk.

Please keep an eye out for Mick Lord who will be at registration.

NOC will need a good spread of results across all the courses (yellow to green) so if you are unsure what course to run, then please make sure you talk to Mick.

Hilary Palmer has some exciting news about a new activity taking place on the 1st Saturday of each month.

During the Autumn/Winter/Spring why not pop down to Rushcliffe, you can start anytime between 11 and 11.40 and the session will end at 12.30 when the controls will be collected.

Just send me an email in the days before if you plan to come so I will have enough maps but if you forget just turn up - I'm sure to have a few extra maps. Each time there will be a challenge to find as many controls as you can: walking, jogging or running - in 45 minutes and there may be some small prizes for having a go! There will also be a suggested 'Long' Course for people who really want a longer 'run' - it's about 6.2-6.5km for the 6th October session.

Beginners are very welcome - so why not tell a friend or print out and give them the attached poster. I will be there to give coaching tips, of course.

Looking forward to seeing you at Rushcliffe Country Park (Ruddington,NG11 6JS) - look for the signs to see where the start point is (usually at the Environmental Centre)

Hilary

Broxtowe Sport – Scooteering! Orienteering with a difference!
Wheely good fun on Bramcote Park!
Press Release

Who:
Broxtowe Sport are working in partnership with Nottinghamshire Orienteering Club to host a new session for children and their families. The sessions are suitable for both boys and girls aged five years plus and aimed at all abilities. (All children aged five to seven years must be accompanied by an adult on the park at all times.)

What:
Get your scooter ready! It’s going to be wheely good fun on Bramcote Park this summer - Scooteering has arrived! In partnership with Broxtowe Sport, Nottinghamshire Orienteering Club are hosting a new session for children and families to try orienteering with a difference! Families will get the opportunity to meet new people, get fit and learn how to orienteer whilst racing around the park on a scooter! The weekly sessions will include map reading, orienteering exercises and mini scooter races! Each session will be a great opportunity to learn a new sport whilst spending time with family and friends. All sessions will be led by a qualified British Orienteering Coach.

These new session’s will be the first of their kind! It’s a brand new activity thought of by the Broxtowe Sport Team and the Orienteering Club. It’s never been done before and it’s not to be missed!

Why:
The sessions are a new and exciting way of introducing young people and their families to orienteering. By adding a scooter element to this traditional activity it is hoped that more young people will become interested in orienteering. This new element will add more challenge and excitement to the sport that has fallen in popularity over recent years. The session also aims to encourage people to take part in more sport and physical activity, as part of the Governments recommended 30 minutes activity five times a week. The session additionally provides people with the opportunity to take part in something different with their family and friends, bringing people in the community together.

When:
The first session starts on Thursday 14th June 2012. Sessions will run weekly from 6.30 - 8pm. Visit www.broxtowe.gov.uk/sport4me for individual session dates.

Where:
All sessions will take place at Bramcote Park. Participants are asked to meet by the children’s play area near the main car park.

How:
Sessions cost £1 per child or £3 per family. No booking is required, just turn up and join in the fun!

Other Details:
Helmets are recommended. A small number of spare scooters are provided. Participants are asked to bring a drink and wear suitable clothing for the weather conditions.

For further details and information please visit www.broxtowe.gov.uk/sport4me or contact Broxtowe Sport by calling 0115 9173572 or emailing sport@broxtowe.gov.uk

Alternatively you can contact club coach Catherine Hughes by calling 07940 575758 or emailing hubclub@noc-uk.org

Notice is hereby given that an extraordinary general meeting of the East Midlands Orienteering Association will be held at 13.15pm on Sunday 8th July 2012 at the registration area in Nottingham Castle at end of Nottingham city race. The full details can be read in the latest edition of the EMOA newsletter.
On-line entries are now open, further details.
Good luck to the elite NOC relay team in Scotland this weekend. They are currently 2nd in the UK relay league ukrelayleague.org.uk/

As well as the Scottish Championship extended weekend, there are a few other events in the offering, but unfortunately none of them are that close to NOC land.

The “closest” being urban events at Knaresborough and York.

For those who have decided to travel..........

The South East has 4 days of orienteering at its Jubilee festival
The South West has the ever popular Tamar Triple.
We’re delighted to announce that NOC has been invited to take part in the Big Wheel’s Big Day Out which will take place alongside this years exciting Cycle Live Festival of Cycling weekend.

On the 14th July 2012 the festival will take place in its new location at the Victoria Embankment; previous events have attracted an audience of up to 21,000 individuals

The festival is free for people to come along to and we’ll use this opportunity to promote sustainability issues – green transport, cycling and walking along with a range of activities to showcase the arts, cultural activities, sporting activities, health and well being…and more!

I will coordinate the planning for this event and can be there during the afternoon. This event will be an ideal opportunity to promote orienteering to novices who've not tried it before by us taking out mini-maze navigation exercise to the park. A coach will set it up and take down - but I need some help from NOC members to spend a small amount of time during the day - manning the stand, showing people how to take part and of course telling them about the events we do at weekends on evenings that they can take part in. Please email me if you could spare an hour at some point on 14 July - anytime from 9:30 to 4pm - I would be very grateful. NB - I will have a budget for tea/coffee/ice cream (other reasonable expenses) etc - to help you keep your energy levels up!

Thank you

Catherine Hughes

Saturday/Sunday 30th June - 1st July: BAOC Harvester Relay at Bordon Heath, Aldershot, Hampshire. A 7-leg or 5-leg overnight relay starting at 11pm or 3am and finishing at ~8am! This is a challenging night orienteering relay but there are dawn and day legs too. Please let me know (Andrew Powell) if you're interested by 1st June as the middle closing date is 4th June. For further details see: http://www.baoc.org.uk
Sunday 16th June: DVO's Peak District Footpath Relay. A 10 leg relay along Derbyshire's footpaths starting and finishing at Carsington Water. Leg lengths vary between 3.3 miles and 10 miles. Let me know (Andrew Powell) if you're interested by 8th May as the closing date is 11th May. I will give out route details if we manage to raise a team.

Some further details from the organiser below:

On Leg 1 and Leg 6 (around Carsington Water) a team will be allowed to split the leg between two runners. This is to allow two Juniors, say, or two Oldies to run a leg that will be only 3.3 miles (instead of 6.6 miles). Any person under the age of 17 can only run on Legs 1 and 6 (no roads to cross) as we have to comply with the BOF Insurance policy.

Leg 1 will start at 0930 from the Sheepwash car park and Leg 6 will have a Mass start from the same place as soon as the first runner comes in on Leg 5. (Legs 6-10 will be the reverse routes of Legs 1-5).
If anyone fancies a 5 mile run at the end of the month then the “Trent 5 Miler” offers true P.B. potential.

NOC normally have a good few entrants and the Elliott family normally man the drinks station, so any NOC members will definitely get an extra cheer!

Organised by Beeston A.C., this year's run is on Wednesday May 30th at 7.15 p.m. Cost is £6/£4. Further details can be found on the Broxtowe sport link and on the Beeston A.C. Website

Thieves Wood events this weekend are on! (Though please check again just in case some more snow arrives).

The night event on Saturday: no change to the arrangements here.

Sunday's event: see changed parking details here. Parking by kind permission of the staff of Portland College and we will be collecting £1 per car as a donation to the College. Please be aware that there is a pedestrian controlled crossing to get to the wood and this MUST be used to cross the A60. We are pleased to be able to stage this event and we hope you will come warmly dressed for fun in the snow. There is a cafe at the College offering hot drinks and snacks and Ultrasport is hoping to be with us.

A big thanks to Hilary Palmer and the team for all their enthusiasm in sorting this out.
If you are planning on attending either the day or night events then please check the NOC website before you set off. Car parking may be a problem and we are currently looking into alternative parking arrangements, so please keep on eye on the website for future updates.
There will not be a meeting of the Bassetlaw Club on Wednesday 8th February due to the large amount of ice that is still present on the fields and drives of Worksop College. See the Bassetlaw section of the web site (Bottom Left) for further information.
The session at the Bramcote Club has been cancelled for this week, 9th February. We may meet on 16th if the ice and snow has gone by then - watch the Bramcote Satellite section of the web site (Bottom Left) for information.
The East Midlands now has an urban league. 2012 will see four events nominated with your best 3 scores to count, for further details see http://eastmidlandsurbanleague.wordpress.com.
